origins

They called her a whale, but the pod always said it the way you say a mispronounced word, like if they repeated it enough she would eventually become correct. Melcutela was born a whale, yet strange from the very beginning. She was smaller than most, her body lighter, her presence quieter. Even her voice was different. Where other whales carried thunder in their songs, Mel’s loudest call sounded more like a whispered melody, soft and trembling through the water rather than shaking it. She was odd and quirky not only because she disliked endless swimming, but because she was endlessly curious. She stopped often, not to rest, but to learn. A strange rock on the seafloor could keep her still for hours. A pattern in coral could send her spiraling into questions. She had a habit of falling into deep rabbit holes of research and understanding, especially when it came to fossils of ancient megalodons, imagining the oceans they ruled and the stories their bones could tell. In a pod, movement is belonging, and when Mel paused to wonder, the pod kept going without her.

It was not cruelty exactly, just rhythm. A whale pod is a living song, and she was a note that held too softly and too long. The first time she realized she could choose her own rhythm was when she began spending time with sharks. Sharks did not expect her to sing. They did not mind that she floated in place, lost in thought or observation. Sharks were practical and blunt, and most importantly, they did not swim for the joy of it. They swam out of necessity. Among them, Mel found space to be herself, and that was where she met Kimchi, a pink shark who stood out just as much as she did. Kimchi did not quite fit with the others either, too colorful and too expressive, and the two quickly became inseparable. Where Mel questioned and researched, Kimchi listened and lingered, and together they formed a quiet understanding that felt more solid than any pod song.

When Mel grew old enough to live on her own, she made a choice no one from her pod would understand. She left the ocean. Not in a dramatic way and not because of a tragedy, but simply because she was tired of the endlessness of it. The ocean was too large and too full of expectations. She had learned that a home could be built from chosen company rather than tradition, so she found a giant pool tucked between land and water, large enough to hold her comfortably. Kimchi followed without hesitation, along with a handful of other sea dwellers who never quite fit where they were supposed to. It became a small, strange community that suited her perfectly.

Life in the pool came with its own challenges. Sound above the surface felt wrong at first, distant and distorted. Voices from land reached her as vibrations rather than words. During this time, Mel befriended Kiwi, a fox cat hybrid who visited often and never seemed bothered by how unusual the pool and its residents were. Kiwi spoke constantly, about everything and nothing, filling the quiet air with stories, observations, and encouragement. Mel listened for hours, lingering near the surface, breathing the air again and again as she tried to understand this new world. Slowly and naturally, as if the world itself was responding to that effort, a strange change took hold. A pair of fox ears emerged, not crafted or forced, but grown through adaptation and a quiet touch of magic shaped by friendship. As she spent more time talking with land creatures and people, breathing air more often, she developed an odd little side effect. Every now and then, a tiny, cute hiccup would escape her, light and sudden, as if a small fairy was trying to wriggle its way out of her stomach. It became an endearing habit, one that often appeared when she was excited or thinking too hard. With her new ears, Mel could finally hear the world above the water clearly. The first time she caught laughter startled her so much she splashed half the pool.

As visitors began coming more often, someone eventually brought her bubble tea. The sweetness, the texture, the joy of it all struck her immediately. Mel fell in love with boba in the way she did everything else, completely and without restraint, and that love never faded. It only grew stronger. Among all the flavors she tried, lychee became her absolute favorite, light and perfectly sweet. She drank it constantly, experimented with it endlessly, and researched brewing methods with the same intensity she once reserved for ancient fossils. Before long, her body adapted. Slowly, her tail began to change, filling with sweet bubble tea and drifting tapioca pearls until it shimmered beneath the surface. Over time, the color deepened into a soft, unmistakable pink, likely influenced by spending so much time alongside Kimchi. What began as a habit became part of her, and she embraced it fully. With time, and an enthusiastic lack of moderation, she decided that if her tail could be boba, then the pool itself could be as well. Bit by bit, the water transformed into bubble tea, and once it did, it never became water again.

For a while, it was perfect, but eventually the pool began to feel small. The same visitors returned, the same conversations repeated, and even with endless lychee bubble tea surrounding her, Mel felt that familiar pull of curiosity again. She wanted to explore more of the world, to learn and experience beyond the pool, but her feelings about swimming had never changed. While searching for answers, she discovered Vtubing, and something unexpected happened. Speaking through a stream, safe in her pool, she finally found her voice. The whisper that once struggled to carry became confident, lively, and unstoppable. She talked, and talked, and talked, curiosity spilling into enthusiastic yapping about lychee bubble tea, ancient fossils, strange animals, and wonderfully obscure facts she had fallen into late at night. Streaming gave her space to be heard without needing to shout, and the more she spoke, the more confident she became. Through Vtubing, Mel could meet people, spread her love for boba and forgotten creatures, and explore countless worlds without ever leaving where she felt happiest.

Now Mel streams from her bubble tea pool, fox ears twitching as she listens, a tiny hiccup slipping out now and then, her pink tea-filled tail drifting behind her while Kimchi lurks nearby in a splash of matching color and Kiwi inevitably starts another conversation. She no longer needs to follow a pod’s song. Her voice may have begun as a whisper, but it has grown into a constant, curious current, sweet as lychee and just as hard to ignore, and it carries her everywhere she wants to go.
